Have you joined us for a TED Circle yet? This interactive experience is like a book club for TED Talks where you’re invited to discuss our current topic, learn new things and meet like-minded people. Join us on Wednesday, August 26 to discuss the topic – When is it time to grow up?

McKinsey recently published an article about driving in the dark which says that driving by what we can see visually, just in front of us, will bring us to our destination. That’s the way children think and act.

Adults tend to think long term which doesn’t allow them to simply respond to immediate situations. There is less reactive behaviour. Less last-minute thinking. As adults, could we have too much inhibition when it comes to certain areas of our lives?

Inversely, when do we overreact and not think through things enough? Is that a bad thing? Behaving selfishly or without due consideration.

In the pandemic, when we can’t see the end from where we are today, should we be bold and act on what’s in front of us, and just do what’s next? Even though we aren't thinking clearly? And what does the world look like today, if we see it through the eyes of a child?

Featured Guest: Jade Hameister OAM
At age 12, she completes the trek to Everest Base Camp and at age 14 she became the youngest person in history to ski to the North Pole from anywhere outside the Last Degree. She then appeared on our TEDxMelbourne stage (2016) and delivered her talk, “My journey to the North Pole and Beyond”. By 2018, she had completed her mission to complete the Polar Hat Trick becoming the youngest person ever to do so. In the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for Service to Polar Exploration. Now at 18, we’re honoured to have Jade join us again for a TEDxMelbourne circle.

Host: Jon Yeo – Head of Curation, TEDxMelbourne
