The Derby moves from its traditional Stradbroke slot this year to headline the third Group One day of the carnival. It’s the race that launched Kiwi hero Rough Habit’s amazing winter carnival feats and in more recent times has been heavily targeted by Hong Kong buyers, who see it as a perfect forerunner for unearthing their own future stars.

The Kingsford Smith Cup is relatively new in name, but under its previous guise of the BTC Cup had an honour roll headed by none other than the great Black Caviar.
