Beethoven contemporary Ignaz Pleyel’s Symphony in D major demonstrates why he once was one of the most famous composers. Giovanni Bottesini’s virtuoso Double Bass Concerto No 2 is full of lush romanticism. The Intermezzo by Kurt Magnus Atterberg, a Swedish composer, creates a rich tapestry. The great Symphony No 60 by Joseph Haydn, Pleyel’s teacher, brings us full circle with its classic joy and surprises. This is a program with beautiful music rarely played and not to be missed.
