Michael Zerafa is set to face Anthony Mundine on Saturday 13th March 2021 at Bendigo Stadium in Victoria.
Being a fighter has nothing to do with how you handle your business in the ring.
That's something Michael Zerafa learnt in the most tragic way imaginable.
"I still haven't gotten over it 100 per cent," the Victorian tells Wide World of Sports ahead of his fight with Anthony Mundine in Bendigo next Saturday.
Zerafa is referring, of course, to his fatal sparring session with Dwight Ritchie.
As is the case with most fighters, the 28-year-old had a trusted stable of boxers that he would turn to for sparring sessions to test his game plan against an attacking opponent. On that day, Zerafa had invited Indigenous boxer Ritchie, a long-time sparring partner, to test him out; wearing the obligatory headgear inside the squared circle.
In a lot of cases, sparring sessions are designed to be tougher than the actual fight itself. For Zerafa, that fateful session would come to test him on so many levels.
"I still replay that sparring session in my head every now and then," he said. "It was one of the worst days, if not the worst day, of my career. I hope no one has to go through what I had to go through that day."
Zerafa was trading shots with Ritchie inside the ring, like they would usually do. He said they would often go hard at each other.
