If you have completed your degree in retail marketing and sales and are now looking to put into practice all that you have learnt then below is a brief guide on how to land that perfect marketing job.
This will also be relevant to those who are not on the first rung of their career paths but looking for that second or even third marketing job in the hope of getting a better salary or better prospects than what they are getting at the moment.

Start your career path by preparing a CV (Curriculum Vitae). This should be precise while giving details of all your experiences and qualifications to date. In addition you should add relevant personal information about yourself and why you think you would be the perfect candidate for any company. There are online sites that advice you on preparing good CVs and also tools available that give you a step by step guide to preparing a CV yourself.

The next step is to start searching in the job section of newspapers or magazines that cater specifically for the marketing field that you have specialised in. In addition, a good option would be to register with a recruitment agency that specialises in finding retail marketing jobs. They will ask for your CV and then invite you for an interview in which you can discuss exactly what you are hoping to achieve in your sales career. Accordingly they will put you forward for the jobs that are available to them and which they think are suited to you. It pays to register with 2 agencies to get as many interviews arranged before you make your choice.

As for people who are already working in a marketing environment and now want to move up the ladder, it is their achievements and attitude that will make them good candidates for this move. If they have been achieving sales targets set for them and have a pleasant and friendly personality, there is no reason why the company will not consider them for the job.

Product knowledge is also a very good plus point that makes an employee stand out. If you are comfortable in selling a particular product and give the customer information easily and effectively so that they come back to buy from you, there is no reason why management will not look at you as that perfect candidate that should move up in their company.

In exceptional cases it is a case of who you know that helps you land that retail job, but even if you get that job it will be how you perform at this job and your achievements that will speak for themselves. Retail marketing involves a lot of different things which include selling skills, finance and legal knowledge, product knowledge, being aware of market trends and any changes that occur in the economy.

In addition to having these skills you have to have the right personality for retail sales. You need to like people and be able to solve problems as they arise in an amicable fashion. Some retail outlets are very busy and you should be able to stay calm in stressful situations. But if you are a shy and retiring individual retail marketing might not be one of the best of careers for you.
