The Melbourne Suite

The Melbourne Suite is a new collection of four high-energy chamber music works celebrating the past, present and future of some of Melbourne’s most famous roads and streets. Composed by award-winning composer Callum Watson, the four works include ‘Flinders St’, ‘The Ring Road’, ‘Brunswick St’ and ‘Chapel St’.

Inspired by Fats Waller's famous 'London Suite' written during the composers 1938-1939 trip to England, the Melbourne Suite reflects a comparably tumultuous period in our city's history with bushfires and COVID-19 between 2019 and 2020. Thus, the four works explore both the great cultural history of each street as well as the recent unprecedented events.

The new pieces will be premiered by some of Melbourne’s finest young musicians including Flora Carbo (Alto Saxophone), Joel Hands-Otte (Bass Clarinet), Laura Winter (Harp), Amogh Ananth (Violin) and Matthew James (Viola).

This event scrupulously adheres to COVIDSafe principals, including the mandatory wearing of face masks, provision of sanitization stations and design of a physically distanced performance space for audiences. As a condition of entry you must sign in for contact tracing purposes. The event will be filmed for Youtube should you not be able to attend.
