Jeremy Goldstein’s Truth to Power Café is a profound theatrical experience told through a combination of memoir, poetry, image, music, and film. In a cathartic episode of truth-telling, nine participants from the local Casey community give voice to their lived experiences, in response to the show’s central question “Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?”

The premise of Truth to Power Café is rooted in the political and philosophical beliefs of Nobel prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter and his Hackney Gang, who championed the disenfranchised, the anti-war movement, and speaking truth to power.

The internationally acclaimed online theatre event has travelled the world from London and beyond and now comes to Bunjil Place as part of The City of Casey’s Ageing Positively Festival. Local participants have played a part in shaping the narrative of the performance, with their tales telling a story of a resilient and diverse community.

Speaking truth to power is a non-violent means of conflict resolution, and it is widely accepted to mean saying something to those in a position who don’t want to hear it. This is particularly prevalent in the era of post-truth, where speaking out has never been more important.

“An example of conscious transformation of history into opportunity." - Sarah Schulman, writer/AIDS Historian and founder of ACT UP Oral history project New York.

“The revolutionary potential of theatre at its simplest and most direct.” - The Guardian

“Compelling and cathartic… defined and passionate… the essence of live performance.” - The Queer Review
