BRUNSWICK PICTURE HOUSE presents BRUNS RIVER FLICKS

Let’s face it, it’s been a rough year and we all need a bit of distraction.

For many, it’s getting out and about and enjoying the natural splendour of what our spectacular little beach town has to offer. For some, it’s indulging in escapism, leaving our troubles temporarily behind and being thoroughly entertained by a show, film or any artistic diversion. Could there be a way to marry the two?

For a long time, we have wanted to throw an event for the community with broad family appeal and now we feel the time is right as we all try to continue on after the curveballs thrown at us all these last few years. With support from the NSW Government, the Brunswick Picture House is thrilled to present Bruns River Flicks - a weekly series of 5 Saturday night outdoor film screenings right here on the river’s edge, in Banner Park.

The screenings will be free of charge (although tickets and registration will be required) and as has become the norm for a Picture House film event, each film will be accompanied by a fun, entertaining live element that will blow your thongs off!

The lovingly-curated films start on Saturday, 5 November from sunset. Bring your warm blankets, dig out those festival-worn camping chairs, fill up your picnic baskets or grab your takeaway from the numerous Bruns eateries… and join us for five nights of outdoor cinematic fun under the stars, right here in Bruns! The film event will start each Saturday from around 7pm, with the film screening from sunset.

WHAT’S PLAYING?

The films selected for our very first River Flicks are, without further ado:

SAT 5 NOV: We pay tribute to the golden age of classic B-horror films with THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, with super-cool live musical accompaniment from Picture House favourites Ben Walsh and Tom Thum. Rated G.

SAT 12 NOV: A family favourite for over 3 decades with special guests, the Bruns pelicans: STORM BOY. Rated G.

SAT 19 NOV: The Brunswick Heads Olivia Newton-John Appreciation Society invites you to a special screening, our very own love letter to ONJ: XANADU. Rated PG.

SAT 26 NOV: We celebrate the Big Daddy of the aqua horror film genre with an all-immersive experience in JAWS IN 7.5D: THE BRUNS EDITION! Rated M.

SAT 3 DEC: We’ll Drag you out of the doldrums with THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, in true BPH fashion. Rated M.

ABOUT JAWS

You know the drill. Small town. Summer holidays. Killer shark munching on happy holidaymakers, with the inevitable do or die tussle with the great beast from the deep. “Jaws” changed cinema history and every swimmer’s comfort zone in the ocean shifted for summers to come.

Now come and experience our very unique, immersive Sense-Around “Jaws” — in 7.5D! You may not feel safe again, but you will die laughing, and fully intact!

2h 4m. Director: Steven Spielberg. Starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss.

THE FINE PRINT

The screen will be set up on the banks of the beautiful Brunswick River in Banner Park. No individual seats are provided, so dust off those picnic blankets and low-height deck chairs, and come down early to grab a spot in the park. For those planning on bringing tall or high-backed seats, we ask, for the convenience of all to please set up at the sides or the back, to allow everyone a good view of the screen.

The films will be a free event, but registration will be required. To give as many folks in our community a chance, tickets will be restricted to 4 per person. Each filmgoer can borrow a headset from us, to be returned at the end of the screening - ID and contact information will be required.

If the weather is looking a bit dicey, we’ll keep an eye on the skies and make a decision by 2pm each Saturday as to whether the screening will proceed. If it’s looking too wet and woolly, we’ll try one more time on the Sunday.
