Metallica's Kirk Hammett has named Dave as one of his favourite guitarists, saying "His slide playing kills me".
Born in England, Dave moved to Perth at the age of 4. As a teenager, he fell for the blues upon hearing a Muddy Waters record and began to teach himself to play by listening to records of Blind Willie Johnson, Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson. He joined a high school band and continued playing while at University. After graduating he turned professional, having decided that music was his first love. Then, either by accident or by fate, he broke his finger in a football game. The only way he could continue to play the guitar without pain was to put a slide on his index finger and play from over the top of the guitar neck. When his finger eventually healed, he had become so fond of the tone from the 'wrong' way of playing that he never turned back.
After gigging non-stop in the '70s and '80s, he produced SHORT FUSE BLUES in '91. On a whim he mailed a copy to Jas Obrecht, then editor of American "Guitar Player" magazine. "Magnificent, staggering, almost beyond belief. Utterly Blues approved. ... What more could you ask?" raved Obrecht, tipping off Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer, who released it worldwide. Dave became an international phenomenon. Veteran Gary Moore even invited him on tour to play stadiums, arenas and Royal Albert Hall.
After 10 Albums, world tours, a NAIRD and an ARIA, Dave is regarded as one of the all-time slide guitar greats. Don't miss his exclusive Melbourne show with Rudy Miranda on drums and Ian Lees on bass.
