A gate to the Upside Down has been ripped open Down Under!

Direct from Off-Broadway, Salty Theatre is thrilled to announce the Australian premiere of the new smash hit, seven times award-winning musical, Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical. Take a trip back to Hawkins, Indiana, 1983: when times were simpler, hair was bigger, and unsupervised children were getting snatched by inter-dimensional creatures. Join Eleven, Dustin, Mike, Lucas and the whole Hawkins gang for a night of adventure, thrills, indulgent pop culture references, pubescent angst, heavy synth, poor parenting, convoluted love triangles, cheap effects, dancing monsters, and maybe, just maybe… justice for everyone’s favourite frumpy ginger, Barb Holland.

Created by New York-based Jonathan Hogue (The Nations) and produced Off-Broadway by Jonathan Hogue and Nick Flatto (Heart of Rock and Roll) this Australian premiere is one-third of a totally rad Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical global takeover as it’s set to have a London premiere and Off-Broadway return this spring.

Salty Theatre's co-founder and Artistic Director, Canadian theatre and screen vet Ashley Taylor Tickell, directs this Australian premiere. Tickell shares, “We’re beyond excited to have the opportunity to introduce this ridiculous, heart-pumping, toe-tapping horror sci-fi spoof to Australian audiences. As massive fans of the franchise (and Winona!) it truly is a rip-roaring and ludicrous love letter to the global phenomenon that is Stranger Things.”

Salty Theatre was co-founded in 2018, and in its short existence has shaken up the Australian musical theatre scene. As an enterprising female-led boutique musical theatre company Salty Theatre connect writers, directors, producers and performers from across the globe to form new creative partnerships and present and develop new or rarely-produced works to Australian audiences. Most recently, they remounted their sold-out Melbourne production of Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody.

Running this November at the Meat Market in Melbourne, Stranger Sings! A Parody Musical is a wild and irreverent send-up of the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” and all its campy 80’s glory. Get ready to go Upside Down.

“A giddy, fast-paced 95 minutes...The peppy, rock-driven score is well-crafted and instantly catchy. Additionally, the book is witty and smartly-structured, framing the show’s shenanigans wonderfully... A particular joy that had me in stitches.” – Adrian Dimanlig, Interludes

"A topsy-turvy take on the Upside Down...Extra delightful and refreshing” - Time Out

"Go see this screwy, high-camp musical of your favorite TV show" - New York Times

“Every time I was convinced that "this song had to be the showstopping number, another would follow. Nothing sums it up better than the messy notes I scribbled in the darkened theater: vocals = fire.” – Broadway World
