MAKURU FESTIVAL is a weekend of Indigenous activities celebrating the incoming Noongar season - with free culture and learning for the whole family.
Held against the backdrop of Yagan Square's new "selfie-museums", the MAKURU FESTIVAL @ YAGAN SQUARE program will include:
Saturday 28 May:
- Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Vaughn McGuire Whadjuk elder
- Hip hop performance and workshop with award-winning, proud Noongar Wongi rapper Flewnt MC, accompanied by Optamus (from Downsyde).
- Whadjuk/Tainui artist Julianne Wade’s basket weaving workshops throughout the afternoon.
Sunday 29 May:
- Welcome to Country by Vaughn McGuire Whadjuk elder
- The Gya Ngoorp Dance Group will perform the Yallorr Keeninyarra, the ancient dance of the Whadjuk Noongar people,
- A song and dance workshop led by Djirrily Dreaming, suitable for all-ages.
- Whadjuk/Tainui artist Julianne Wade’s community canvas art project
- Noongar Bush Pharmacy Workshop presented by Bel and Djirrily Dreaming to learn about the use of native bush plants and flowers being used to treat common ailments
The MAKURU MARKETS running across both days will feature Deadly Demin Clothing, Julianne Wade art, Buffie Creative’s handmade earrings, apparel and artworks by Noongar Yorga Aboriginal woman Buffie Corunna, and contemporary artist and designer Jarni McGuire’s Jarni Creative art for sale.
