The Australian Geographic Society is thrilled to announce the launch of its inaugural Awards for Nature, an initiative to support deserving conservation projects across Australia. The awards will provide $100,000 in grant funding to three vital projects combatting biodiversity loss, managing invasive species and mitigating climate change.

Taking place on Thursday, 17 October 2024 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the event will be attended by beloved Australian actor and filmmaker Rachel Ward, who will present her inspiring documentary, ‘Rachel's Farm’, chronicling her journey from leading lady to regenerative farmer. The film offers a look at Ward's efforts to restore the ecological health of her own rural property after witnessing the devastating impacts of the 2019-20 bushfires. Following the screening, Ward will participate in a special Q&A led by Chair of the Australian Geographic Society, Chrissie Goldrick to discuss her passion for environmental stewardship.

“It’s an honour to be at the launch of this very important Awards supporting conservation projects which will make a difference to our future. After seeing my own farm threatened by the fury of the bushfires, I knew I had to use my platform to spread the word about regenerative farming as a real solution to the climate crisis. I’m pleased to be among so many inspiring people to share my film and be part of the conversation on supporting our environment,” said Ms. Ward.

At the inaugural Awards for Nature event, one grant will be awarded in three categories: $20,000, $30,000 and $50,000, which in Year Two will increase to two applicants in each category. From Year Three, the Australian Geographic Society will add continuation funding to projects that show growth. Each of the Grant Awardees undergoes a comprehensive selection process decided upon by the Australian Geographic Society Board.

Chrissie Goldrick, Australian Geographic Society Chair, said: "These grants represent a major investment in Australia's natural future and a new chapter in Australian Geographic's legacy of supporting conservation. By shining a spotlight on these innovative projects, we aim to inspire and empower the next generation of environmental champions and make a real difference."

The Awards for Nature event takes place at 7pm on Thursday, 17 October 2024 at the Art Gallery of NSW on Art Gallery Rd, Sydney. Tickets are $50 for Adults and $20 for Children, with special rates for Australian Geographic subscribers.
