Strap yourself in for a wild and wonderfully uplifting rocket ride!
After a sellout 2023 season in Brisbane, Queensland Theatre’s award-winning Drizzle Boy is on its way to RPAC for one night only!
Following the story making history by debuting Australia’s first ever neurodivergent character portrayed by a neurodivergent actor on a main stage, Queensland Theatre’s play is set to stun audiences across Queensland in a regional tour, including a performance at Redland Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, 21 November, at 7.30pm.
Written by neurodivergent playwright, Ryan Enniss, and directed by Queensland Theatre’s Matilda Award-winning Associate Artistic Director (Programming), Daniel Evans (The Almighty Sometimes, Vietgone, Medea), the production soared to success, winning the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2022-3 and earning two Matilda Awards.
The story follows a young autistic boy as he embarks on his journey into adulthood and manhood taking back his story from a world of misunderstanding with irreverence and audacity. As a biting satire blending magical realism with a journey of self-discovery, the play centres on the titular Drizzle Boy, portrayed by Daniel R Nixon (A Chorus Line, On The Town), during his first weeks at university.
Drizzle Boy is poked, prodded and diagnosed by a world that wants to change him and a family struggling to understand him. Then, on his first day of university, he meets Juliet and suddenly everything seems possible — even his lifelong dream of building a rocket and blasting-off toward the stars!
Be inspired by this charming and witty coming-of-age adventure of hope, as Drizzle Boy experiences university, love, and independence. More than a journey of self-discovery, this story offers a window into what it is like to see the universe differently and to feel that you don’t fit in.
If you enjoyed the cult film Rain Man, Drizzle Boy is sure to strike a chord in your heart.
Book tickets for this deeply moving and enlightening play for $19 - $39 by calling the RPAC Box Office on 3829 8131 or visiting www.rpac.com.au (booking fees are $5.30 by phone and $6.40 online per transaction).
