The Importance of Being Earnest follows two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who concoct elaborate deceptions involving a fictitious persona named ‘Ernest’ to navigate their social lives. Their ruse becomes increasingly tangled as they discover their love interests, Gwendolen and Cecily, are fixated on marrying a man named Ernest.

Amidst this confusion, Lady Bracknell’s stern opposition—based on the absurd claim that a suitor’s origins is merely ‘a handbag’—adds to the farce, as the characters grapple with their own convoluted tales.
