‘Almost Maine’ is a funny, and slightly absurdist romantic comedy. The play explores themes of love, loss, heartbreak, and the complexities of relationships, a mix of humour and heart. In the current cynicism that tends to define our lives, it is a heart-warming play that can restore our optimism and belief in love, life and second chances.

Written by John Cariani, the play comprises a series of scenes, each featuring a different couple in a different stage of their relationship. And all take place during the same timeframe, on the same cold, clear, winter night, in the fictional town of Almost, Maine when the northern lights are visible.

Cariani’s script packs wit, earns its laughs and, like love, surprises you, as the characters find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Do the bruises heal, and the hearts mend? Well, almost.

“Catchy and creative. The perfect show for young and old alike”
AM New York

The inspiration for Almost, Maine struck playwright and actor John Cariani in the early 2000s, as he searched for audition monologues he himself could use. Not finding any to his liking, Cariani wrote his own, based on his experiences growing up in northern Maine.

Since 2007, this quirky play has become one of the most popular plays in the US with nearly 100 professional productions and over 5000 community, university, and high school productions to date. It is now finding an audience in Australia and has been translated into over a dozen languages.
