John Lydon issues statement after The Project interview

John Lydon's sexist old man rant on Channel Ten's The Project has made international headlines, prompting Lydon to issue the following statement: “I am the enemies of governments and institutions, certainly not women. I've been married to one for 30 years. We love each other.”

The controversy surrounds a sexist remark Lydon made to host Carrie Bickmore during an interview (of sorts). Lydon was rambling when Bickmore interrupted him to ask his views on Margaret Thatcher. The carefully considered response was: "Hey Mrs, shut up! Whoever you are shut up, shut up, shut up. Now listen, when a man is talking do not interrupt […] stop it you sound like one of them dreadful loud birds I don’t like."

Lydon's band, Public Image Ltd (PiL) are performing tonight in Melbourne.
