Gympie Muster, Woodford Folk, gain Major Events status

Two of Queensland’s biggest music festivals, the Gympie Music Muster and Woodford Folk Festival, have been granted Major Events status by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ). Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey said, “The State Government, through TEQ, recognises these events play an important role in driving economic and social benefits to their regions, helping to attract visitors and showcase the State.” Both festivals – the Muster has lasted for 31 years, and Woodford Folk launched in 1987 – attract patrons from overseas and around the world. “This support from the State Government is an incredible opportunity for the Muster to continue to grow its loyal audience not only domestically but also abroad, to assist driving visitation to the Sunshine Coast region,” said Muster chairman Glenn Smith.

The Muster confirmed it will receive $150,000 and will market itself internationally. Woodford Folk’s GM Amanda Jackes said: "This wonderful demonstration of commitment from our State Government is the breath of wind we needed to continue the course we’ve been charting with our patrons and organising group. As Australia’s largest gathering of artists and musicians, we are looking forward to honouring this support by continuing to grow a truly international event for Queensland in a sustainable manner." TEQ is supporting 40 major events in 2013 as part of the Govt’s goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.
