Your Guide To: Tropfest

The 22nd Tropfest hits Sydney this Sunday and with a weighty finalist program, the world’s largest short film festival for kids and live entertainment from the likes of Tina Arena, Illy and Busby Marou, we’ve decided to pick out the parts we’re most excited for.

Trop Jr kicks off proceedings at 11am. Running for the seventh time in the festival’s 22-year run, the for kids, by kids affair will feature 16 seven-minute films based on the term ‘Monster’ by children aged 15 years and under.

The 2013 Tropscore winners were announced last month where screen composer Michael Lira won Tropfest’s film score competition Tropscore and 15-year old Alana Patmore took Tropscore Jr. Both perform their winning entries at Tropfest.

Other performances between the film competition at 8pm include a live performance from hip-hop group Beats (followed by a hip-hop master-class led by Dance Academy’s Keiynan Lonsdale), Sydney-bred, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Lenka, Australian Idol alumni Ngaiire, indie-folk band Jinja Safari, hip hop rising star Illy, Rockhampton soul duo Busby Marou and six-time ARIA Award winner Tina Arena.

The 16-strong film program was influenced by the signature item ‘Change’; and will feature films spanning comedy, thriller, drama, documentary and mockumentary genres.

MC of the event is comedian Steve Philp, Linda Marigliano and Giles Hardie will host the red carpet at 6pm and broadcast hosts Adam Spencer, Yumi Stynes, and Marc Fennell will introduce audiences to the filmmakers and Tropfest‘s panel of industry and celebrity judges.

Tropfest will be held at the Brazilian Fields in the heart of Centennial Park this Sunday December 8, head to tropfest.com/au for more information.
