Cuisine Scene: The Audreys talk Breakfast On The Road

This week Australia's most high-profile roots duo will release their much-anticipated fifth album 'Til My Tears Roll Away'. The 3x ARIA winners have been lauded by Rolling Stone Magazine, featured on TV dramas One Tree Hill and Rain Shadow and are set to announce a national tour through June and July. Guitarist Tristan Goodall tells Eventfinda he and Taasha Coates are self-confessed foodies and offers his guide to breakfast on the road, whilst inadvertently displaying a flair for comedy writing.

You know they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and for the touring musician - this is almost an understatement. When you wake up in a different town every morning (or early afternoon) knowing that immediately ahead lies debilitating travel, the unbearable pain of listening to the drummer sound-checking, seemingly endless periods of interminable boredom and a minimum of 27 units of alcohol, it’s vital to start the day right. So here is my guide to breakfast on the road.

First up, get some local knowledge. Survey the punters after the show and get some tips - you want a quality cafe that has good coffee (this is obviously a must) but is not overcrowded (you do have to get back on the road eventually) or too-cool-for-school. Proximity to your digs is also relevant and should be a determining factor.

Now the important part: ordering your eggs. Never underestimate the ability of a small-town (or large for that matter) chef to fuck up poached eggs. This is almost a point of pride for some cooks so just avoid them all together. I don’t care that poached is your favourite style, it’s just too risky. Get ‘em fried, scrambled, boiled or baked. Get ‘em in an omelette or a tortilla. Just don’t get ‘em poached unless you want to start your day with bitter disappointment. Enjoy your latte while the only decent meal you’re going to eat all day is being prepared and then tuck in.

One last tip: steer your bandmates away from the beans, there’s a long day in the car ahead, so let’s not make things more unpleasant than they need to be. Don’t let that stop you ordering them yourself though.

Follow these simple rules and you’ll return to your loved ones healthy, happy and only half-insane. And if you’re in Perth, this brekkie is going to cost you at least $1100 so hopefully you sold some merch the night before.
