Troy Cassar-Daley - Freedom Ride Tour

Liberation Music is thrilled to announce that Australian country music icon Troy Cassar-Daley will release his 9th studio album, Freedom Ride on Friday March 13 and will hit the road for a massive national tour in Mulwala, Albury, Bairnsdale, Morwell, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Melbourne, Charleville, Blackall, Warwick, Gunnedah, Armidale, Inverell, Wagga Wagga, Nowra, Canberra, Merimbula, Hunter Valley, Dubbo, Orange, Medlow Bath, Lismore, Grafton and Tweed Heads.

Grafton boy he may be, but Troy Cassar-Daley is a musical nomad. Troy’s entire career has been as nomadic as it has been successful. 25 years has delivered numerous ARIA & APRA awards, 26 Golden Guitars, gold and platinum records and a legion of loyal fans.

Get Troy talking about Freedom Ride, and prepare yourself for a journey, literally as well as musically.

“I had an empty canvas sitting at home and wanted to paint an interesting picture for everyone with songs. I loved co-writing with old friends again on this album and the themes we looked at stretched from one end of the country to another. There are a lot of people's lives woven through these tunes and I hope they use this collection of songs as a mirror and see themselves in a few of the stories I've touched on.

"There are many modes of transport but my favourite one is music so jump in with me for a small journey all aboard the 'Freedom Ride'."

And Troy has the hunter’s instinct. He’s a resourceful and irrepressible collaborator who seems to bring the best out in everyone he works with, be they writer, musician or technician. It’s quite a mob. Paul Kelly steps up as vocalist as well as lyricist on the title track, Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes joins Troy for an earthy duet. The careful craftwork of Peter Denahy and Colin Buchanan is breathed into musical life by the likes of Brent Mason, Biff Watson, Eddie Bayers, Michael Rhodes, Tom Bukovac, Steve Nathan, Bruce Watkins and Larry Franklin.

And, in perhaps the most potent image of all, it’s the summer of 1965 and Charles Perkins is joined by a bunch of young students. They’re winding their way across New South Wales on a confronting and courageous quest for equality, looking for answers that would take decades to unfold. That are still unfolding to this day.

“I became aware of the Freedom Ride here in Australia while in High School in Grafton. As part of Aboriginal studies I did a project about Charles Perkins and the people who rode on the Freedom Ride bus, who were from all walks of life. Charlie was a hero to me because he talked about equality, and improving the lives and conditions of Indigenous Australians living out in the rural regions and cities. He became a defiant voice that called for change in Australia and his achievements were many. Paul and I wrote this small version of what must have been a huge adventure for the freedom riders; going from town to town, learning the truth about how Indigenous life in this country could be brought into line with mainstream Australia. Charlie changed views and perceptions with his passion and to me was an important part of our progression as a people and as a nation”.

Not unlike the journey of Troy Cassar-Daley, hunting and gathering, singing and dreaming. Entertaining. Uniting.

A musical nomad, inviting us all to join him on the Freedom Ride.
