It has been named after the novel Ferdydurke written by Witold Gombrowicz in 1937. This novel explored the problems of immaturity and youth, the creation of identity in interactions with others, and dealt with ironic, critical examination of class roles in society and culture. The novel was deemed scandalous and subversive by Nazis, Stalinists, and the Polish Communist regime and was officially banned in Poland for decades. Melbourne's Ferdydurke also refuses to conform and therefore cannot be stereotyped as a 'beige' city bar.
