Illawarra Primary School believes that the very best it can do is make its students literate, numerate, thinking individuals who have the personal confidence to contribute to society in a way that is positive and ethical.

Its students achieve highly in academic areas, sports, and the arts. Its supportive school environment is based on a shared understanding of the rights and responsibilities of students, parents and teachers. Three questions are the basis of all school rules: Is it Safe? Is it Fair? Does it Show you Care? All are encouraged to use these questions to guide their choices and behaviour.

Literacy and Numeracy learning has particular priority. Illawarra students are also involved in a number of enrichment programs such as The Outdoor Classroom, CELO online learning for gifted students, Mathematics competitions or Science research, Italian language classes, sports and the Jumping Jacks skipping demonstration team. Students can participate in choirs, recorder and guitar groups. The brass program is open to students in Grade 5 and 6. Senior students have many leadership roles including, Daily PE leaders and Student Mediators.

There is a high degree of parent support and community involvement at Illawarra Primary School. Staff encourage and welcome parents and community members to become involved in the learning programs through working in classrooms, the School Association, assisting with sports, excursions, helping in the canteen or school vegetable garden, attending curriculum workshops and becoming literacy buddies.
