A $15.5 million restoration has transformed the 139-year-old Kathleen Syme building in Carlton into the area’s first-of-its-kind creative, learning and community space.
The building is home to a comprehensive library, as well as learning and training rooms with a computer lab, recording studio, meeting rooms, community activity spaces, cafe and also includes free wifi.

Externally, the restoration remained faithful to the building’s original architecture, however behind the stunning Victorian-era facade is a modern, welcoming and accessible centre where all members of the community can read, connect, learn and create.

In a nod to the building’s former life as a state school, the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre is now open for new learning.

The centre caters for a variety of needs and spaces, including:

- new library featuring over 40,000 items in a wide range of formats and languages (10 per cent of the materials are in Chinese, Japanese or Korean)
- bookable multi-purpose meeting spaces and facilities including a recording studio, conference rooms and training and technology rooms
- social enterprise cafe, Wild Timor coffee.
