Newman College is a Catholic coeducational Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 school which educates in the Marist Tradition. Current enrolment is approximately 1,890.

Newman College is owned and governed by the Marist Brothers, Province of Australia. The Province exercises its governance of the College through Marist Schools Australia (MSA).

As a Marist School, Newman College derives its charism from the founder of the Marist Brothers, Saint Marcellin Champagnat (1789 - 1840). A priest of the Society of Mary, St Marcellin was a man of warm personality, deep faith and great vision. Following the dysfunction of society in rural areas in the aftermath of the French Revolution, his primary focus became the Christian education of youth. He founded the Marist Brothers in 1817 at La Valla, a little village in the Loire region of France.

In speaking to the first Marist Brothers, St Marcellin outlined his pastoral approach to students:

We must love them all and love them equally
From this flows Newman College's approach to its students: We welcome young people. We listen to them, we challenge them. We see in each one the image and likeness of God, worthy of our respect and love, no matter what his or her circumstances.

College Council

The primary purpose of the Council is to provide advice and support to the Principal in order that the Principal may lead the College effectively as a Catholic school community, with its evangelising and educational mission shaped by Marist spirituality and educational practice. A secondary purpose of the Council is to provide strategic advice, and financial and policy approvals as requird by MSA policy. The Council operates within the policies and protocols of MSA and the Catholic Education Commission of WA.
