Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School (OLSH) is situated in the heart of Randwick and is part of a thriving Missionary of the Sacred Heart Parish. The school was established in 1881 by parishioners and later in 1882, by the Poor Clare Sisters and Loreto Sisters. The school’s strongest history and traditions date back to the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Sisters who ran the school from 1898 and later, the Brigidine Sisters in 1902. The school’s celebration of its long standing OLSH and Brigidine charisms have a strong influence on our school’s identity. Our school motto, 'Strength in Matter and Gentleness in Manner' is inspired by Mary and the Spirituality of the Heart of Jesus.

The school is a co-educational Catholic Systemic School consisting of two streams with an emerging three streams in Kindergarten in 2019. The school has sustained a steady student population growth with a current enrolment of 438 students, made up of 244 girls and 194 boys.

The school enjoys a very positive partnership with the OLSH Randwick Parish and the school has nurtured its close relationship with our parish priests. The spiritual aspect of the liturgical and special celebrations ensures a positive and supportive school culture among staff, students, parents and parish. OLSH School is part of a vibrant ‘Collaborating Community’ and enjoys strong links with Platinum Pre-school, Brigidine College and Marcellin College. This has assisted students in their transition to Kindergarten and to our Catholic high-schools.

The Archbishop’s Charter continues to provide a shared vision for the faith development of the community and the delivery of curriculum. Students and their families attend class Masses each term and the monthly Family Parish Masses provide a parish-school partnership helping to build a strong and supportive parent group who ably support the parish sacramental programs and social justice initiatives. Our connections with the wider community include parishioners from local state and private schools who join our students for sacramental liturgies and celebrations. School-based celebrations and a positive and welcoming school environment ensure families are in partnership with the spiritual, emotional and academic development of our students.

The school’s Wellbeing Team, the introduction of a Family Educator several years ago, and in 2019, the appointment of a Catholic Care School Counsellor, have all been great supports for student wellbeing and their families. The School-wide Positive Behaviours for Learning Program (SWPBL) is well established in the school and the values of ‘Be Respectful', ‘Be Responsible’, ‘Be A Learner’ and ‘Be Safe’ are embedded throughout the school. The Cool Kids and the Marist Restorative Justice programs support students and staff to engage in positive and respectful relationships.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School has a strong commitment to being a Catholic learning community that focuses on the principles of life-long learning and promoting collaboration between all stakeholders. The staff is committed to a culture of continuous growth and the school invests heavily in the professional development of all staff to ensure that we keep abreast of the most current and best learning and teaching practices and ideas.

In 2020 OLSH became a Newman Selective Gifted Education school. Students and their learning are at the heart of OLSH and the diversity of learners is celebrated. Student leadership is promoted and many opportunities for student leadership are provided from leading assemblies, special leadership roles, the Buddy Program, to joining the Gardening Club. Students set their goals for their learning each term and are assisted by staff who are very committed to identifying and providing high-quality differentiated programs for all students.

OLSH School is supported by a very active Parents and Friends Association and Principal’s Advisory Council. The teaching staff consists of a range of ages, experienced and specialist teachers to teachers in their early years of the profession. The school is blessed with a very supportive and highly skilled school administrative team and learning support officers.
