The origin of Rockcliffe was an 18 acre expanse of apple orchards set in the Eden-like paradise of Denmark, West Australia.

In the late 1980’s a family acquired the property, christened it Matilda's Meadow and commenced the planting of dry grown vines.

In 2002 Steve Hall, a geologist, became the new owner and, under his enthusiastic direction, Matilda’s Estate underwent a refurbishment of the Cellar Door, Art Gallery & Restaurant.

Coby Ladwig, previous co winemaker of West Cape Howe, quickly joined the team; followed in 2011 by Luke Eckersley, previously with Forest Hill. They brought a history of success, enthusiasm and an extensive range of skills to the winery.

In 2007 the building of a brand new winery that can facilitate producing 50,000 cases of wine per year signalled a new stage in the evolution of the brand and business.

In 2011 Chef Silas Misah opened the restaurant “Pepper & Salt” inside the Cellar Door.

In 2013 Matilda’s Meadow became “Rockcliffe” after the stretch of 100m high granite rock cliffs that dominate the eastern end of Denmark’s main bay. The same granite lies beneath the winery and gives distinctive characteristics to the wine.

Today the Rockcliffe team is working everyday to produce some of the best wines of Western Australia and is also planning a new expansion for the winery.
