Sandgate has an even, flat esplanade along the length of its beachside area which appeals to walkers and cyclists, and its safe beaches with picnic facilities and playgrounds make it a great place for families to enjoy a beachside barbecue.
With horse racing and equestrian pursuits prominent in the area, it's not unusual to see people horseriding on the beach in the early morning. At low tide, land yachts can sometimes be seen skirting over the beach.
