The Sir Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre is a 528 seat proscenium auditorium, with full technical facilities and support. It includes a centre-based manager, technical staff and computerised box office. The theatre - opened in 1982 -features an ortchestra pit for up to 40 musicians, a stage depth of 12.3m x 20m wide and rear, front projection screen, fully appointed dressing rooms and spacious rehearsal area with mirrors and barres.

The Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre was named after Mount Gambier's most famous performing artist, Sir Robert Helpman (1909-1986). The Australian dancer, actor, director and choreographer added the extra 'n' when he began dancing to avoid there being 13 letters in his name, because it was considered bad luck.

The theatre's raked auditorium and overhanging balcony gives patrons an intimate experience during live performances.
