The church building was completed in 1908. Of a Romanesque style the building speaks powerfully of the faith, courage and vision of the Catholic parishioners and priests of the time.
Over the years the interior of the church building has seen some significant changes in the 1920s and the 1970s after the second Vatican Council and more recently after a devastating fire in 1989.
The pressed steel ceiling and many furnishings were destroyed in the fire, however thankfully the magnificent stained glass window, the Stations of the Cross and the pews were all saved. The ceiling has been replaced to its original form and the original mosaic tiled floor in the old sanctuary restored.
From 1989 until 2005 the internal layout of the church underwent experiment to ascertain a design and layout that best suited the change in liturgical requirements and to honour the architecture.
The final refurbishment was completed for Easter in 2006. As was the case with the original building, the refurbishment was completed and paid for by the generosity of many parishioners.
St Joseph’s Church stands as a strong statement of the faith of the local catholic community. It is the spiritual home and place of worship and prayer for our people.
In the community of Benalla and district, St Joseph’s attests to the Presence of God in our midst. As a sacred place of prayer and hospitality it is open to all and, in a real sense, belongs to all.
For the many people who visit, we entrust our church to you for prayer, reflection and we trust it lifts your spirit and you find peace within.
