The Basin Theatre Group is situated in the Mt Dandenong region, and has been producing amateur productions for over 50 years.

When Edna Chandler and a small group of friends in 1954 produced the play 'Quiet Weekend', no one expected that it was the beginning of a long line of theatrical productions involving many talented people over the succeeding years.

By 1957 as the enthusiasm grew, a constitution was created and office bearers elected. In the beginning the plays were conducted in the Basin Progress Hall and other public halls in the surrounding area.

By 1962 the activity and membership had grown to the extent that larger facilities were needed, so the group voluntarily participated in the construction of an A-frame barn, which became known as The Hut. This building provided the group with the ability to conduct readings, rehearsals, social events and even put on productions.

With more audience participation, the group became very enthusiastic at the challenge of building a permanent home. The vision was an intimate theatre with good facilities with a rustic charm to fit in with the surrounding area. With the help of extensive fund-raising and voluntary labour within the group the theatre was constructed and completed by April 1973 on land that had been donated by Edna and Fergus Chandler.

The group had become the first amateur theatre company to construct its own theatre without the aid of government funding. Since then various renovations and additions have been included to provide more comfort to our audiences.

Experience was also gained in the participation of drama festivals from time to time in Melbourne, country Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. This was rewarded with the group winning awards in several festivals, including the Moomba Drama Festival.

The Basin Theatre has four productions a year, including modern tragedies, comedies with significant social themes, comedy-dramas and merry melodrama, which provide a considerable and entertaining range of theatre for our patrons.

In 2004, The Basin Theatre Group celebrated it's 50th anniversary.
