This has always been a busy church with a wide range of groups within the congregation. Over the years there has always been (and continues to be) a strong emphasis on serving the local community, not just of Wollongong but of the entire Illawarra.

It was this emphasis that led Wesley Church in 1969 to sponsor and support the establishment of LifeLine in the Illawarra and, for a time, to provide housing for the LifeLine telephone counselling service. There is a still a strong link between the congregation and LifeLine.

Similarly, in the early 1980s, it was the congregation’s emphasis on serving the local community that led (under the guidance of the minister at the time, the Revd Clyde Dominish) to establish Wesley Community Care – still a major activity of this church. About the same time, again under the leadership of the Revd Clyde Dominish, Wollongong Wesley was a prime mover in the establishment of the Farmborough Grove Retirement Village and Nursing Home at Unanderra – now part of the UnitingCare Ageing network of aged care facilities throughut the Illawarra and beyond.
