Todd Mall

The Todd Mall was constructed in two sections.
The first was the section between Parsons Street and Wills Terrace and, later, the section between Gregory Terrace and Parsons Street.
The decision to create a mall was not a popular decision with all residents and traders. Several meetings were held to protest the new initiative and, in the beginning a compromise was reached where a one way access lane with some parking, wound its way through the northern section of the street.
Construction of the new mall took many months and there was severe disruption for traders in the area.
While the new mall is attractive it has caused business activity to shift away from Todd St to the other shopping centres in the streets further west.
I recently walked along the northern section of the mall and saw hardly anybody in the area. If it was not for banking access and a few shops I doublt anyone would use it.
On reflection, I think it would have been a far more popular and practical excercise to have restored the street to its wide verandah original theme, but this is a personal view only.
