Toowoomba Community Organic Gardens Association is a not-for-profit organisation promoting natural gardening and farming practices. It started life back in 1982 as the Darling Downs Natural Growers Group. 20 years ago, in 1996, volunteers from the group rallied together to plan and implement the development of the Community Organic Gardens at 22A Goggs Street, a publically accessible reserve set aside by the then Toowoomba City Council.
The gardens aim to demonstrate a sample of various styles of community gardening. Eventually, the concept of satellite community gardens may come alive around the Toowoomba Region, where higher density housing and social isolation seems to be ever increasing for urban residents.
A wide variety of food plants and companion plants are part of the landscape at TCOG. Shared garden areas include a fruit tree orchard, bush foods project, herb garden and a permaculture project. Members choose all kinds of vegetables to grow in their individual raised bed hire plots, often swapping harvest items with each other or sharing seeds and ideas. New members of the association are always welcome, you don’t have to hire a plot to be a member.
