An Evening of Duets

First Set: Hannah Kim (Korean drums) and Sam Gill (Saxophone) is an improvising duo. Their music interweaves between Korean and jazz-influenced improvisational rhythms.

Second Set: Yulugi is a fresh contemporary collaboration between Gumaroy Newman, an indigenous didgeridoo player and Keyna Wilkins, a composer-musician; a dialogue across cultures, a melting pot of indigenous and western sounds and textures.

Followed by a short Free for All- where audience & musicains improvise in random bands together.

Artist Bios:
Hannah is a traditonal Korean drummer and a multi-instrumentalist. She is active as an improviser, experimenting with Korean traditonal music is Sydney. Previously she has won Haitai award and has done residency at Changwoo theater with ensemble Dam'ta in Seoul. Currently based in Sydney she has performed with well known-Australian musicians including, Chris Hale and Andrea Keller. She is also active as drum trio 'Tagolak' with drummer Simon Barker and Chloe Kim as well as numerous duo projects.

Sam Gill is a saxophonist & composer based in Sydney. His music explores the intersections of composed and improvised music, often appearing with his own groups Coursed Waters & Scattered, as well as the collectives Mind on Fire and Microfiche. He has played with a number of Australia's most acclaimed improvisers including Simon Barker, Chris Hale, Andrea Keller, Steve Magnusson, Matt McMahon, Gian Slater & Clayton Thomas. His most recent activity has included the release of the debut recording by Coursed Waters—‘Many Altered Returns’—on Earshift Music in April 2019.

Second Set: Inspired by the Australian landscape and animals, and accompanied by striking natural Australian projected imagery, this duo will explore spiritual awakening through "Yulugi" (meaning play in the language of the Gamilaroi people).

The duo features Keyna Wilkins, a pioneering flutist, pianist and composer and one of three national finalists in the APRA/AMCOS Art Music Awards for Individual Excellence 2018, and Gumaroy Newman, who is an in-demand didgeridoo player who has performed all over Australia in indigenous ceremonies and concerts alike including performing with Christina Anu. Stylistically broad, this duo will will take you on a journey into the heart of Australia with dream-like sequences alongside landscape depictions and animal mimicry and echoes of tribal lores, drawing on a myriad of musical influences, to create a unique and authentic soundscape of Australia.
