Sionainne Costello (°1995, Australia) is a practicing photographer and videographer, currently living in Melbourne. Her work explores the relationship between the land, urban spaces and ourselves as humans.

Ever since she was small, Costello has been fascinated by the essential unreality of the universe. What starts out as yearning soon manifests into distress and crisis, leaving only a sense of failing and thus cyclically births a newfound spark for creation.

As Above, Almost Below: Caught Between the Stars and the Salton Sea attempts to establish a link between natural surface reality and that imagined by its conceiver. The works focus on realisations that question our existence and our physical connection to natural beauty. The viewer is left with a testament to the inaccuracies of our condition and lack of self-awareness as a planet.

By exploring the concept of landscape, cosmos and the human body in an objective way, Costello investigates the dynamics of these elements, including the manipulation of their form and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what reality means to us.

This series resounds and resonates with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination and nature. With a subtle minimalistic approach, Costello creates work in which a fascination with subjective opinion and influence is explored. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.
