Forty years ago this September, a group of young artists staged the first-ever show of contemporary art in the People’s Republic of China. Author Madeleine O’Dea joins filmmaker Henry Thong in a conversation about how China’s artists have forged a place for themselves over the succeeding decades, each generation renegotiating their relationship with their own country and with the West. Their story highlights the tumultuous course of post-Cultural Revolution China, as well as the current complex state of the relationship between China and the West.

Madeleine O’Dea will be signing copies of her book The Phoenix Years: Art, Resistance and the Making of Modern China following the lecture. Books will be available for purchase.
