“Based on a true story”, The Dish focuses on the crucial role of the Parkes Radio Telescope in broadcasting the moon landing live to the world. But it is only a movie, and it leaves much untold.

Kerrie Dougherty reveals the full extent of Australia’s involvement in the Apollo 11 moon landing and the role our space tracking facilities played in the wider Apollo program. How did Australia really bring the Apollo 11 landing to the world? How did the Parkes telescope contribute to NASA’s Deep Space Network? And how can an Australian experiment placed on the Moon during Apollo help with future lunar exploration? The Dish is only part of the story.

Kerrie Dougherty is an independent space historian, curator and educator, who was previously Curator of Space Technology at the Powerhouse Museum. She is the author of Australia in Space, a comprehensive history of Australian space activities, a lecturer in space humanities for the International Space University and an elected Member of the International Academy of Astronautics. Kerrie has written numerous articles on Australia’s space history and is the author of several science fiction guidebooks.

Free event, everyone is welcome. No bookings required.
