Relating identity politics and dharma wisdom with Venerable Yonten.

Many people who are interested in Buddhism, introspection and self-development are also interested in politics, activism and social change. How do we unify and integrate the work we do internally with the changes we seek externally? What does it mean to have equanimous goodwill to everyone while still naming and addressing harmful policies in our government, workplaces, or even family structures?

Ven. Yonten brings her background in the social and environmental justice movements in the USA in the 1990s (as well as her upbringing as the child of activists) to the ongoing dharma discussions she facilitates in various dharma centres across Asia and Europe.

Join us for a day of discussion, debate and deep contemplation of our own prejudices and how to unlock them. Learn about the delicate line of naming ones own identity without it becoming a barrier that blocks compassion. Learn about the arising of identity itself and how to explore its dissolution ....

Ven. Yonten is known for her fresh, modern approach and warm, engaging teaching style. She regularly teaches at Mahamudra Centre in New Zealand and is a faculty member of Human Spirit: Psychoanalytic-Buddhist Training Program in Lod, Israel. Originally from the United States, Venerable Yönten became a nun when she was 21 (in 2003), and with the permission of her Abbot received gelongma/bhikshuni ordination in 2011.

Established 1974, Chenrezig Institute is a centre for Buddhist study, meditation, retreat and practice nestled in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The Institute is home to a Tibetan Geshe (Lama), a large community of ordained Sangha (monks and nuns), students, residents, volunteers, retreat goers and guests.

Apart from the formal study programmes, Chenrezig Institute is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks. Stroll along the bush paths, wander in formal garden, espresso in the cafe or a vegetarian meal.

Teachers’ availability subject to change; please check Chenrezig Institute Calendar for updated information. Also below the far carpark is ‘The Wellbeing Centre’ which provides courses focusing on cultivating physical, emotional and mental balance and wellbeing. They include authentic traditional and modern psychological approaches to health and lifestyle.
