Fugitive Opening

Fugitive is a solo exhibition by Skylar Ru Silva (formerly Ruwan De Silva).

In Fugitive, Skylar draws inspiration from the mediocre, the minute, the overlooked and undesirable. More specifically, the finger smudges left on the screens of his phone and tablet. These organic, intricate abstractions are reflected in the choice of malleable and non-permanent materials used—dry erase ink on whiteboard, face makeup and shoe polish on glass.

Areas of Skylar’s process draw parallels to ‘Wabi Sabi’, the traditional Japanese aesthetic and world-view that centres on acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.

Skylar explains, "I'm interested in this play between the true wabi sabi elements and the use of photography and prints to preserve and/or commodify the fleeting moment. Framing a whiteboard so it’s protected from the inevitable embrace of transformation and change."

'Fugitive' is an intimate, intuitive and playful demonstration of how something insignificant and mundane, with a shift in perception, will transform into a multi-layered and expansive expression of energy and inspired action.
