Nordic Noir, stunning dramas and quirky comedies are just the tip of the iceberg with the Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival, presented by Palace.

The popular festival returns to Perth this winter presenting 21 films from our friends in the north—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden at Palace Cinemas' Cinema Paradiso (Northbridge) and Luna Palace Cinemas' Luna on SX (Fremantle).

The Festival opens with the cheeky, star-studded Danish comedy happy ending—a winning examination of the female condition, described by Screen Daily as the "Nordic Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," this is a film about second chances in love later in life.

The centrepiece selection is Iceland's breathtaking A White, White Day—fresh from its praised premiere in this year's Cannes Film Festival, this is a spellbinding and darkly humorous drama about a stoic man whose emotional reserves are pushed to their limits.

Other stand outs include Steig Larsson: the Man Who Played With Fire—an insight into the author's meticulously researched and politically charged archives. To celebrate this, the festival also presents a retrospective of the tremendously successful Millennium Trilogy Swedish films—The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009), The Girl Who Played With Fire (2009) and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest (2010).

Unmissable highlights also include Sweden's futuristic Aniara—where a colony of materialistic and consumption-obsessed humans flee the now destroyed Earth; X&Y from Denmark which presents a stimulating exploration of hidden female/male identities; and one last deal from where an ageing art dealer is presented with one final opportunity to fix his broken life and reconnect with his estranged daughter and grandson.

Always competing and diverse, the Scandinavian Film Festival presents a strong and diverse programme of films not to be missed.
