Have you ever seen a handmade blanket or afghan at a craft market or an op-shop and wondered: how long did it take to make? How much is it really worth? Artist Katie Theodorus set out to shed some light on this question by making a blanket of her own, from start to finish, and documenting the process.

She timed herself as She crocheted, changing colour every hour. Every coloured stripe that you see represents one hour of work. Dealing with stray wool ends and adding a fringe to each end is also a time-consuming process, so she took these into account, too. Accompanying the piece is a mock invoice, detailing the time taken, and cost of materials and sundries.

Do you think this amount is fair? Is her work as a craftsperson worth as much as her work as an archiving officer?

How much is my labour really worth to you?
