Marlinspike Rope Craft

Learn about the marlinspike knot craft with Mick Corker, this legacy skill derives from the bygone days of the tallship sailor. Think 1600–1800s, Lord Nelson, Captain Cook, pirates and buccaneers. As a means to pass time on long journeys, resourceful seamen knotted and shaped rope for a plethora of tasks on board ships. The result is ingenious knot structures that can put to a number of uses—it also looks fantastic.

Traditionally marlinspike knot craft involves the use of natural hemp and other natural fibres and was predominately three and four strand rope. These days it can also be explored with a variety of synthetic ropes and steel cable.

Mick Corker has researched this lost skill for many years, keeping marlinspike alive by perfecting his skills and knowledge. This workshop is a unique opportunity to be introduced to this legacy skill. In this workshop you will also learn about suitable ropes and cords and see a demonstration of a more complex knot tying process, such as lanyard knots or diamond knots.

Mick will show you an easy way to make a monkey fist key chain, this popular knot that has many uses and can be made any size with any rope. You will also make your own small rope mat using an under and over method. This forms the basis of how many more mats of all shapes and sizes can be made!

About Mick Corker:
Mick Corker is a self-taught craftsman, his meticulous research and dedication to marlinspike has lead to his ability to produce a vast variety of high quality handmade rope work. Based on Palm Beach in Queensland, Mick established his business Jack Tars Locker (insta @jacktarslocker) which specialises authentic handcrated décor. His clientele range across Australia and the USA, he has high international demand for nautical enthusiasts seeking the perfect accompaniment to their beach side homes.

Mick also applied his craft to a larger scale and interesting commissions such as children’s playgrounds and the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, where he worked with a team to create the rigging of the tall ships. Mick’s dedication to marlinspike ropework is also reflected in his desire to pass these skills on to others. We are excited to be hosting this workshop at artisan and help Mick encourage others to take up a piece of rope and getting knotting!
