Heidelberg Choral Society performs My Spirit Rejoices, a concert featuring three best loved choral works. Under the direction of Peter Bandy, the choir and orchestra will perform Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s anthem The King Shall Rejoice and Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass.
Written in 1723 while Bach was appointed Kantor of St Thomas, Leipzig, his Magnificat is one of his most popular vocal works. "Bach is recorded as saying "when there is a devotional music, God with his grace is always present", says conductor Peter Bandy. Bach was devoted to the beauty of creation and the faith it can inspire."
"The King Shall Rejoice is one of four coronation anthems originally commissioned for the coronation of George II when Handel was a newly naturalised British subject."
"And when Gounod composed his beautiful Petite Messe Solonnelle de Sainte-Cécile in 1855, it brought him much attention in Paris and has been a firm choral favourite ever since."
"My Spirit Rejoices will be a concert to showcase the inspiring choral works of three outstanding composers," said Peter.
Soloists include Cristina Russo (Soprano), Shakira Dugan (Mezzo Soprano), Robert Macfarlane (Tenor) and Markus Matheis (Baritone).
The venue is close to Ivanhoe station. Car parking is available behind the nearby town hall.
