A dedicated Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on 11th November in memory of Australian and Commonwealth members of the armed services who have served and perished in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

On this day, a Salvation Army band, army cadets’ veterans from Dapto-Port Kembla RSL sub-Branch and community members will come together to honour and remember those who have fought for our freedom. Ladies of The Red Cross will host morning tea, followed by a wreath laying’s by 10 involved organisations, and speeches with local community leaders in attendance.

"This event is part of a global day of respect for the heroic people who have lost their lives for their country, including the brave ANZACs," explains Shirley Wilson, Family Service Manager at Lakeside Memorial Park. "We are humbled to have the opportunity to pay respect to our soldiers, and further their legacy. It’s an important occasion to ensure their memory and gratitude for their service lives on, in this generation and the next."

Remembrance Day evolved from Armistice Day, which was instituted in England to commemorate the end of World War I. This annual occasion was later developed to more widely recognise the Commonwealth soldiers of all modern wars. It is observed each year on 11th November to mark World War I's official end to hostilities, which commenced at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918

The day traditionally features a moment of silence at 11am sharp, as well as a "Last Post" bugle call. "Last Post" is customarily played at military funerals and commemorative services to bid a final farewell to those who have perished, while symbolising that their duty is accomplished and enabling them to rest in peace.

"Remembrance Day is more than a memorial. It is also a celebration of our beautiful and distinguished nation, which is sustained by the men and women who bravely serve this country," says Shirley.

This specific event was created by Dapto-Port Kemble RSL and is held in partnership with Lakeside Memorial Park to support the community in recognising all, especially local, defence force personnel.

Lakeside Memorial Park encourages all members of the public, particularly veterans' groups, historical, RSL and Ex-service organisations, schools, and families and friends of deceased veterans, to attend.
