Remembrance Day

A dedicated Remembrance Day ceremony will take place in memory of Australian and Commonwealth members of the armed services who have served and perished in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

The event will include laying of tributes by community members and local leaders, a speech by President of the Toronto RSL Sub-brand Ron Mitcherson, refreshments, and a performance by the Librans, a female duo who specialise in Australiana music.

“This event is part of a global day of reverence for the heroic people who have lost their lives for their country, including the brave ANZACs,” explains Garry Bellenger Family Services Manager “We are humbled to provide this opportunity to pay respects to our soldiers and continue their legacy. It’s an important occasion to ensure their memory and the gratitude for their service lives on, in this generation and the next.”

Remembrance Day evolved from Armistice Day, which was instituted in England to commemorate the end of World War I. This annual occasion was later developed to more widely recognise the Commonwealth soldiers of all modern wars. It is observed each year on 11th November to mark World War I’s official end to hostilities, which commenced at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

The day traditionally features a moment of silence at 11 am sharp, as well as a “Last Post” bugle call. “Last Post” is customarily played at military funerals and commemorative services to bid a final farewell to those who have perished, while symbolising that their duty is accomplished and enabling them to rest in peace.

“Remembrance Day is more than a memorial. It’s also a celebration of our beautiful and distinguished nation, which is sustained by the men and women who bravely serve this country,” says Garry.

This specific event was created by Lake Macquarie Memorial Park and held in partnership with the neighbourhood Toronto RSL Sub-brand to help the community acknowledge and salute all—and especially local—defence force personnel.

Lake Macquarie Memorial Park encourages all members of the public, and particularly veterans’ groups, historical, RSL and Ex-service organisations, schools, and families and friends of deceased veterans, to attend.
