William Walton started writing his violin concerto in Italy, a country he was falling in love with and was soon to make his permanent home. The concerto, which was commissioned by the great virtuoso Jascha Heifetz, is full of Italianate warmth, bel canto singing, and capricious charm. Sibelius's 5th Symphony, one of his most popular works, was inspired by the sight of sixteen swans soaring into the sky, an image that the composer recreated in the exultant music of the last movement. Beethoven's dramatic overture to a Roman tragedy completes the program.
