Screening: The Marriage of Maria Braun – 1978

Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, The Marriage of Maria Braun begins with the wedding of a young German couple, Maria and Herman Braun, as bombs fall around them during the last days of World War II. The couple have little time to celebrate, as Herman is almost immediately shipped off to the Russian front.

When the war finally ends, Maria spends her days looking for her missing husband and tries to make a life for herself in the gritty aftermath. In order to provide her family with the basic necessities, Maria first takes up with an Americaan sergeant and then becomes the mistress of a wealthy importer. In her heart, though, Maria is loyal to her husband, patiently waiting for his return.
