This concert explores the music of Clara and Robert Schumann and their devoted friend, Johannes Brahms. ACO principal cellist, Timo-Veikko Valve and virtuoso young Australian violinist Grace Clifford join Artistic Director/Pianist Kathryn Selby, AM for a program of great Romantic Piano Trios and a special duo to celebrate the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann. This program encapsulates the powerful story of three giants of the classical music world whose love and friendship has fascinated us to this day.

Violinist Grace Clifford is a winner of the Australian Young Performer of the Year Award. At last year’s Australian Festival of Chamber Music, she was the youngest invited musician, at age 19, in the Festival’s history. She completes a Bachelor of Music at the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia this year. She first performed with Selby & Friends in 2014 in the “Development Artist” program mentoring rising-star musicians.

Timo-Veikko Valve enjoys international renown as a top-rated musician and Principal cellist of the ACO, with whom he also concertizes as a soloist. He curates the ACO’s chamber music series. Hailing from Finland, Timo-Veikko Valve is an audience favorite, performing regularly with Selby & Friends.

Kathryn Selby, AM is Artistic Director of Selby & Friends and Australia’s eminent pianist celebrating 30 years of creating memorable concerts in 2019. A driving entrepreneurial force, her brainchild Selby & Friends, now in its 13th season, performs 5 tours annually with a revolving roster of guest artists in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, and the NSW Southern Highlands and Turramurra. 2019 marks Selby & Friends’ move to Canberra’s Llewellyn Hall in special Chamber Music Mode.
