Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can be traced back to the Chinese, Egyptians, Greek and Roman Empire all have records of use in some form of oil usage. The Chinese and the Egyptians would also use incense made from aromatic herbs and spices. The tombs in Egypt show oils being used to anoint their bodies to rejuvenate their skin and to preserve the bodies after death for preservation and entry into the next life.
From as far back as 4500 BC traces of cedarwood, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon have been found impregnated in mummies’ bandages.
Only the upper classes where allowed this privelege but everyone used oils as gifts to the gods.
With wall paintings dating back to 2300 BC showing evidence of these practises.
Later on, Hippocrates The Father of Medicine circa 460 – 377 BC treated individuals by using baths and massage with scented infusions.
The earliest known distillation of oils dates back to 425 BC.
In 1871 a papyrus was discovered with over 800 suggested formulations many contained honey and myrrh.
The term Aromatherapy was first used in the 20th Century by French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé. Following an accident when he burned his arm and to relieve the pain placed his arm into the nearest liquid to him. This liquid was lavender essential oil and it was this activity which led him to discover that the burn he suffered healed quickly and left no scar upon him. His book, Aromatherapie, gave us the start of the name aromatherapy.
He then used the oils to treat patients following the infliction of war wounds during world war one.
In 1939 an Australian doctor, Dr Penfold, discovered the benefits of Tea Tree essential.
Madame Maury, studied the way oils work on the skin. She is the author of, Secrets of Life and Youth, which purports the theory that using essential oils can rejuvenate the skin. She also set up many clinics offering treatments across Europe so is another big influencer of this therapy.
