Ashley Hribar plays Dr Caligari: musical rebirth of a silent film legend

Australian pianist-composer Ashley Hribar performs his own original music score to the 1920s silent film classic The Cabinet of Dr Caligari at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival, kicking off a broader national tour.

Celebrating its 100th year in 2020, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is probably cinema’s most influential Expressionist silent horror films.

Opening on 26 February at Mercury Cinema, Ashley Hribar plays Dr Caligari: Musical Rebirth of a Silent Film Legend will see Ashley perform in front of the audience on an amplified piano (inside and out), while also using electronics, a Moog DFAM drum machine, bells, eggs shakers and even a toilet brush.

Prepare to be lured into the dark depths of this quirky story, where Ashley creates colourful landscapes of classical, contemporary and jazz music and sounds—funnier, scarier and more hauntingly bizarre than ever.

The film’s hero, Francis, grapples with the deranged Caligari in a world that is not quite what it seems. Who is responsible for the mysteriously coincidental crimes that take place? Only the audience is left to decide.
